Snail Race

At the edge of the meadow lived Spotty, a little snail. His house was spotted, and the moss beneath it was soft. He never hurried. He liked listening to the buzzing and watching as blades of grass rustled in the warm wind.

One morning, Timmy the cricket climbed onto a smooth stone and strummed his thread-thin violin. "Today there will be a big race! From Clover-pile to the Great Dandelion! The winner will receive a fragrant dandelion crown!" The meadow rumbled with joy.

"I'll come too!" shouted Bertie the grasshopper.

"Me too!" laughed Stella the ladybug.

Spotty said softly, "I would like to too."

"Sure, Spotty!" nodded Timmy. "The race is for everyone."

Timmy played two cheerful notes. "Go!" The meadow sprang to life at once. Bertie took a big jump, Stella flew up, Mandy the ant appeared with a yellow crumb, and Spotty started off, pulling a shiny stripe.

On the path, a puddle spread. Bertie jumped over the first half, but with his second jump, he splashed into the middle of it. "Oops, this is deep!" he shouted.

Spotty reached him. "Wait, I'll bring a leaf!" He lifted a wide plantain leaf and pushed it to the bank. He found a flat pebble too. "Step on the stone, hold onto the leaf!" Bertie stood on it, and Spotty pulled slowly. It worked!

"Thanks, Spotty!" laughed Bertie. "Now I'm a wet athlete."

Then a naughty wind rose. Stella would have flown between two blades of grass, but the wind swept her into a spiderweb. "Help!" she whispered.

Spotty stopped. "Hi, Polly the spider!" he spoke kindly to the spider in the corner of the web. "My friend got caught. Would you let her go?"

Polly the little brown spider peeked out. "Tut-tut, this is not lunch, but a red dot. Right away." Carefully, she loosened a few threads. Stella slipped out onto the glittering snail stripe. "Thank you!" blushed the ladybug. "You're welcome," nodded Polly, and wove the web back.

Mandy, meanwhile, pushed the big crumb. "Wow, this is bigger than me!"

"You can put it up on my house," recommended Spotty. "I'll take it to the hill."

Mandy laughed. "You are a moving crumb transporter!" Carefully, she put the crumb on top of Spotty's house, and they started on together.

A thick branch fell onto the path. For Bertie, it was a jump; for Spotty, it was a wall. "We'll go around," said Spotty. Underneath it, moss grew—green, cool, and soft. They crawled through on the moss. "This is like a soft carpet," smiled Stella, and for a moment she rested on Spotty's house.

Before them, a strip of dry sand glittered. "This scratches," panted Spotty.

"Wait!" shouted Bertie. He tore off a big leaf and spread it as a bridge on the sand. "Now it's smooth!"

Stella circled above Spotty. "I'll give shade!" Mandy ran forward and pulled aside a few tiny sticks. Timmy, meanwhile, played a cheerful melody: "Buzz, bizz, we go, we go!"

The Great Dandelion was already visible, yellow, like a sunflower's little sibling. On the side of the hill, the grass swayed.

"Who will get there first?" chuckled Bertie and jumped up carefully. Spotty stepped and stepped. His stripe shone silvery on the blades of grass. "Let's go, Spotty!" clapped Stella with her tiny wings. Mandy tapped her antenna on the crumb, "Tum-tum, tum-tum!"

On top of the hill, Timmy awaited them. The dandelion crown sat on his antenna. "Have you arrived?" he asked happily. They all arrived together. They panted and laughed. The crumb arrived intact too.

"Who won?" asked Bertie with sparkling eyes.

Timmy smiled. "The race ended, and it was full of good moments," he said. He extended the crown towards Spotty. "This is for you. You came nicely, smartly, persistently, and you paid attention to others too."

"But I'm slow," wondered Spotty.

"Slow? Rather steady," chuckled Stella. "And you have a comfortable back!" added Mandy.

Spotty tried on the dandelion crown. It tickled his nose. "Achoo!" Everyone laughed.

"Let's make more crowns!" suggested Spotty. They picked more yellow heads and threaded the stems round and round. They made a small ring for Bertie, a spotted bracelet for Stella, and a tiny belt for Mandy. Polly the spider got a yellow decoration for the corner of her web too.

At the foot of the hill, they settled down. Everyone got a pinch of the crumb. It was sweet, like sunshine. Timmy strummed softly and the meadow rustled on.

"Shall we run tomorrow too?" asked Spotty.

"Tomorrow, perhaps, we'll play hide-and-seek at a snail's pace," winked Bertie. "At that, you are unbeatable."

Spotty nodded happily. The dandelion crown shone yellow on his head, and the meadow was full of new ideas.
